About Our Programs

Karate Program - Arapahoe YMCA

Shotokan Karate-do, a classical form of Japanese karate, is taught through the Arapahoe YMCA by Boulder Shotokan Karate. Shotokan karate emphasizes a balanced, practical, self-defense oriented approach to the practice of basics, kata (forms), and sparring during training.

Benefits: Karate students benefit physically and mentally. Training enhances the individual's personal safety, physical condition and coordination, confidence, discipline, and concentration.

Instructor: Mr. Bruce Green, 8th-degree black belt and former international and national competitor, is chief instructor of Boulder Shotokan Karate and provides instruction at the Arapahoe YMCA. He has been training since 1970, is a protégé of Master Yutaka Yaguchi, and has been teaching karate within the local YMCA system for 40 years.

What to Expect: Training in a new skill, particularly a martial art, can be a great growth experience. There's more to learn than you might anticipate; mental as well as physical. The dojo (training place) offers a uniquely safe environment for you to learn in - to grasp new ideas, new movements, and even new feelings. Training in karate — for young or old — is a remarkable, thrilling, and multi-faceted experience. Come watch a class.
